Faculty in the Department of Geography are at the forefront of the discipline's future with projects that literally encompass the whole Earth. By dissolving the boundary between social and physical science we are exploring the human dimensions of global change. Our goal is to better understand the Earth's land surface and the way humans interact with it.

NRC Rankings of US Geography Departments

The Geography Department, University of Maryland College Park, ranked 3rd out of 49 Geography Departments in the 2010 NRC Rankings (see the top ten). This is an outstanding achievement and confirms that Maryland Geography is one of the leading departments in the nation. The assessment also showed that Maryland Geography ranked first in the number of citations, indicating the broad level of recognition for our research publications.

Even more encouraging, is that since 2005/6, when the survey was undertaken, a number of substantive improvements have been made to the Department, including the hire of 2 Full Professors, 3 Assistant Professors, 3 Research Associate Professors and 4 Research Assistant Professors. Both our teaching and research have benefited considerably from these hires and the Department continues to grow from strength to strength. For example, in FY 10 the Department has received $9,092,597 in grant income. I would like to extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to all our Faculty and Staff for their dedication and continuing commitment to excellence.
