Faculty in the Department of Geography are at the forefront of the discipline's future with projects that literally encompass the whole Earth. By dissolving the boundary between social and physical science we are exploring the human dimensions of global change. Our goal is to better understand the Earth's land surface and the way humans interact with it.

Fire Mapping Team
The GOFC/GOLD-Fire Program makes use of fire products from satellites for fire management, policy decision-making, and global change research.
Global Climate Dataset
This project will create an equivalent MODIS data set and use the AVHRR/MODIS overlap period to asses the uncertainties in the AVHRR data set and to address data continuity issues.
Africa Fire Network
The Department of Geography is a key partner in SAFNet, providing technical support in the area of satellite remote sensing and geospatial data management.
Biomass Burning
In this project a change detection algorithm has been developed to make spatially explicit maps of burned areas.
